I like your information. I would like to ask if you have done anything with OMR.
A Pathfinder group (like Scouts) have asked me if there is a way to read in a simple survey card with say 5 boxes that can be ticked or crossed or filled in. They need to sort 4000 cards. The cards can be scanned into jpg files.The data is to put into excel or access.

LSet definitely works too. However, the need for DIB sections (as discussed in part 3 of this tutorial) negates the need for any Long -> RGB conversions, so that ends up being the best method of all!

well... the web page didn't format well my comment... :(

the idea behind my comment is once the proper declaration it take only 2 line to get back our color component:

ColorTransfert.Value = lngOldColor
LSet MyRgb2 = ColorTransfert

and voila.

'Color Separation:
'3 'and' and 2 divide ?
'why not use the LSet property to trigger a transfer into the memory ?

'required declaration:
Option Explicit 'optional but always better

Private Type Long32
 Value As Long
End Type
Private Type RGBA
 Red As Byte
 Green As Byte
 Blue As Byte
 Alpha As Byte
End Type
Public ColorTransfert As Long32

'now in a function:
 Dim lngOldColor As Long
 Dim MyRgb2 As RGBA

 'let's define a test color
 lngOldColor = RGB(24, 56, 100)

 'now we get back our color part...
 ColorTransfert.Value = lngOldColor
 LSet MyRgb2 = ColorTransfert

 Debug.Print MyRgb2.Red
 Debug.Print MyRgb2.Green
 Debug.Print MyRgb2.Blue

Your comments on Pixel "reading" will useful down the road (I have bookmarked this page). The only question that remains is if PSet and Point are slow ... what would be the faster process???

I am used to leaving my computer process x million records for database work; the same would be true for processing pixels. But the difference here will be not be that I am managing one image but instead will be looking at about about 300 images; recording the pixel composition; delete unwanted background colors; study the color scale; and then finally begin work on the actual program is needed to be produced for the actual project.

Good thing this is a 4-part tutorial! Haha. Keep reading sections 2-4 - they'll answer your question in great detail.
